  • DESCRIPTION: This chart is amazingly precise, noting hundreds of soundings, detailed coastline, hydrography, topography, roads, towns, anchorages, channels etc. In the lower right is a profile view, “Entrance to Portsmouth, Whale Rock Light bearing N. ¼ E. Distance ¾ mile.” Working sea charts are inherently scarce due to the nature of their use aboard ships. Although likely common when first made, the vast majority of them were either destroyed by use or destroyed intentionally when new updated versions were obtained.
