DESCRIPTION: One of the great double hemisphere maps of the world. This map is based on Nicholas Visscher’s map of 1658 (Shirley #406). Cartographically, the map is largely based on Joan Blaeu's 1648 grand wall map of the world. The hemispheres are surrounded by classical scenes that were drawn by the Dutch painter, Nicolaes Berchem. These mythological scenes depict the rape of Persephone, Zeus in a chariot, Neptune in his shell chariot with his trident and surrounded by Mermaids & Mermen, and Demeter receiving fruits of the earth. California is shown as an island. Second state, with dedication to Charles II.
