  • DESCRIPTION: Jack Dempsey, the "Manassa Mauler" and Luis Firpo, the "Bull of the Pampus" fought at the Polo Grounds in New York, September 14, 1923 in front of 82,000 spectators. Although Dempsey knocked down Firpo seven times in the first round, Firpo regained his footing and knocked Dempsey into the press box before the end of the first round. In the second round Dempsey recovered and won the fight by knockout. George Bellows pictured himself in the scene lower left.
