Map of the United States.

  • ARTIST: J. Young

  • PUBLISHER: Published by S. A. Mitchell, Philadelphia.

  • MEDIUM: Handcolored engraving,

    DATE: 1831-33.

  • EDITION SIZE: Wall map on rollers. Map size 38 x 48" (96.5 x 121.9 cm).

  • DESCRIPTION: A very scarce 1833 edition of Mitchell's first separately published map. This map appeared in both a case and wall map version with this copy being the latter. Ristow and Karrow noted the second state of this map but missed the first state. The first state is usually readily distinguishable due to the lack of delineated counties. This example is not colored by county. The main map extends west to the 95th meridian and shows a substantial portion of the Missouri Territory. A large area west of Lakes Michigan and Superior is labeled "Attached to Michigan." Outlined are current and proposed canal and railroad lines and principal roads. Inset maps include a large map of North America along with close up maps of the cities of Albany, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, Charleston, and New Orleans. A highly decorative cartouche depicts an eagle on a branch just above a shield of "stars and bars." Just to the right of the eagle is a very early depiction of a steam train. On the outer edges are images of a canal scene, an early steam boat, and ocean going packet ship.
