DESCRIPTION: A very nice example of this map showing the strategically important Island No. 10 located near New Madrid or Kentucky Bend on the Mississippi River. The map shows the towns of Tiptonville, Riddle’s Point, Pt. Pleasant and New Madrid. It also notes the homes and the owner’s names in the vicinity. Darkened blocks denote the Union Lines. Shaded blocks denote the “rebel” forces. Also shown is the placement of the ironclad gunboats, transports and mortar rafts. The Union victory marked the first time the Confederate Army lost a position on the Mississippi River. Soon after, the river was then open to the Union Navy as far as Fort Pillow in western Tennessee. This map was made to accompany the Report of Major Gen. John Pope to the Committee on the Conduct of the Civil War. Bowen & Co. Lith. Phila. There are also a number of prints showing the siege.
