DESCRIPTION: This chart shows the entrance to New York Harbor from Sandy Hook northward to Mid-Manhattan. Named on this chart is Coney Island, Gravesend Bay, the Narrows, Staten Island and New York Island (Manhattan). Many soundings are noted along with shoals and aids to navigation. This chart appeared only in the late editions of The English Pilot, Forth Book", replacing the Tiddeman chart. The English Pilot, forth book was originally developed by London publisher John Seller, who conceived it as an effort to break the Dutch monopoly on chart publication. While the two-volume first edition focused on European waters, later editions achieved worldwide coverage, with the Fourth Book depicting the Americas first appearing in 1689. During its publication history of over a century, the Fourth Book went through no fewer than 37 editions along with several piracies thrown in for good measure. Over this span, many of the charts were altered, replaced or updated as new information became available. This chart of New York Harbor is scarce as it was one of the last to be changed.
