Likely published for use for a lecture or class at the British War College. The full title on the paper covers into which the map folds reads "Sketch Map To Illustrate The Virginian Campaign With Inset Maps Of Spottsylvania, The Wilderness, Petersburg, Cold Harbor, North Anna, Totopotomy, etc. (With Notes And References)". The title also refers to flags representing each army which allow students to follow the campaign easily - these flags, however, do not seem to have been printed on the map itself. Three pages of notes on the campaign by Grant and Lee are tipped on the inside the paper covers.
