DESCRIPTION: A fine “old world” map on the classic Ptolemaic conic projection, and one of three world maps from Ruscelli’s Atlas. Girolamo Ruscelli was an Italian cartographer, physician, and alchemist who was known for editing and revising Ptolemy’s ‘Geography’, an atlas and treatise on cartography originally produced during the later years of the Roman Empire. This map was part of a book translated into Italian by Ruscelli, from Ptolemy’s original Greek.<br><br>This map depicts a wide area ranging from Spain and North Africa, through southern Europe - focusing in particular on the Mediterranean basin area including Italy and Greece - to Arabia, the Middle East and western Asia. The map provides an interesting perspective on the ancient world, delineating regional divisions of historic importance.
