  • DESCRIPTION: The very scarce French edition of Captain John Gascoigne’s detailed sea chart of the area around Port Royal and Hilton Head, South Carolina. The chart covers the coastal region of South Carolina, from Parris Island and Port Royal in the north, southward past the mouth of the Savannah River, to and including the northern portion of Tybee Island. The area around Hilton head was first settled in 1562 by Jean Ribaut, who founded the Huguenot settlement of Charlesfort located on today’s Parris Island. Hilton Head, here titled “Trench’s Island”, was named in 1663 by Captain William Hilton. This chart is based upon surveys made in 1728 by Captain John Gascoigne. In 1729, the chart was corrected and improved by Francis Swaine, before finally being published by William Faden in 1776. The chart was originally issued in 1773 by William Faden. It was re-engraved by Georges Louis Le Rouge for inclusion in "Pilot American Septentrionale" his version of the John Faden's "North American Pilot." All editions of the map are considered to be quite rare.
