DESCRIPTION: Map of the United States and Their Territories Between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean, published in 1857–1858, provides a detailed view of the western half of the country at a time when much of it was still being explored and mapped. Compiled from surveys directed by Major W. H. Emory and drawn by civil engineer Thomas Jekyll, the map includes data from the Pacific Railroad surveys, the General Land Office, and the Coast Survey. Engraved by Selmar Siebert with lettering by F. Courtenay, it shows early roads, military forts, and treaty lines marking the boundary with Mexico. The map covers the large Kansas and Nebraska territories and extends to the West Coast, while wide areas in between remain blank or only lightly detailed, reflecting how little was known of the interior.
