DESCRIPTION: James Hamilton Young’s map of Texas was one of the most influential atlas maps of the period. The map shows the newly resolved boundary of northern Texas at latitude 36°, marking the end of Texas’ claim to the upper Rio Grande and eastern New Mexico. Counties are shaded using various colors and labeled. Cities, roads, bodies of water, and geographic features are marked (with relief shown by hachures). Additionally, the map is annotated with notes about the locations of Indian tribes, railroads, and wild herds and statistics from the 1850 census. Inset shows the vicinity of Galveston. This map appeared in a late 1853, 1854 edition of the Cowperthwait edition of Mitchell’s "A New Universal Atlas containing maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World" There is no date on the map and the 1854 edition is normally found with a date and Hidalgo County. On this map Hidalgo County is not yet shown. A dotted line shows the proposed railroad route to the Pacific. In the unsettled west are shown roads, passes, trails, and forts, including the so-called Emigrant’s Route.
