  • DESCRIPTION: The rare second state with the Yorktown inset. of Basset's map showing the theater of war in America during the American Revolution. Cartographically the map shows an area from Newfoundland to northern Florida, and as far west as Lake Michigan. There is a large inset of southern New England, New York, eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey that features the region most affected by the Revolution in 1779. The map is filled with topographical information, boundaries, cities, towns, forts, Indian territory and villages, battlefields, trails and roads. In the upper left is the small inset map, added in this state, "Plan de l'attaque des villes d'York et de Glocvester...". The cartouche depicts an Indian maden, holding a liberty pole and cap. Opposite her are troops in battle, cannon and shot.

  • CONDITION: Fair to good condition. The map had damp staining and damage along the central lower margin. There is some loss of the paper which includes a small section of the neat and imprint line. This has been repaired professionally. Original outline color.
