Eastern Entrance to Nantucket Sound Massachusetts. (Monomoy Island, Chatham)

  • ARTIST:

  • PUBLISHER: Published by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey.

  • MEDIUM: Engraving,

    DATE: 1893, (1909).

  • EDITION SIZE: 24 x 33 1/4" (61 x 84.5 cm) plus margins.

  • DESCRIPTION: This chart is amazingly precise, noting hundreds of soundings, shoals, detailed coastline, hydrography, topography, roads, towns, anchorages, channels etc. Monomoy Island is in the upper left. The tip Great Point on Nantucket is shown in the lower left. Working sea charts are inherently scarce due to the nature of their use aboard ships. Although likely common when first made, the vast majority of them were either destroyed by use or destroyed intentionally when new updated versions were obtained.

  • ADDITIONAL INFO: Manuscript corrections and updates to a number of buoys in the shoals. "Corrected to April 1909".

  • CONDITION: Overall in good condition. Folded into quarters and some surface soiling. Not uncommon issues for a working sea chart. Original color, red on buoys.
