DESCRIPTION: One of the first maps of Alaska after its purchase by the United States from Russia. This purchase, instigated by U.S. Secretary of State William Seward, took place on August 1st, 1867. At the time of its purchase it was popularly called “Seward’s Folly.” Isothermal lines are shown printed in red. This map appeared in 1867-68 editions of Colton's General Atlas.
