DESCRIPTION: This fine folding map illustrates the expanding railroad network between Chicago and the California coast, with particular emphasis on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The map is rich in detail, showing topography, place names, forts, Native American regions, and numerous branch lines. Color-coded routes identify the different railroads: the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe in red; St. Louis and San Francisco lines in blue; the Colorado Midland Railroad in black; connecting lines in gold; and jointly operated routes in green. Although Santa Fe was the line’s original namesake, the main route bypassed the city due to difficult terrain, leaving it served by a smaller branch line visible here. The AT&SF would later become part of the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway following its 1996 merger.
