DESCRIPTION: The Last Ditch of the Chivalry, or a President in Petticoats is a biting 19th-century political satire, lampooning Jefferson Davis and the collapse of the Confederacy. The print depicts Davis fleeing disguised in women’s clothes, a jab at the story that when captured by Union forces in 1865 he attempted to escape wearing a shawl and bonnet. Union artists seized on the tale to ridicule him, portraying it as the final humiliation of the Confederacy. The caricature mixes mockery with symbolic imagery, presenting Davis not as a fallen leader but as a figure stripped of dignity, meant to reinforce Northern triumph and scorn for the “chivalry” of the South.
