The arch sits in Washington Square Park which is at the southern end of Fifth Avenue. The first arch, a wood and plaster temporary arch, was erected over Fifth Avenue just north of Washington Square Park by William Rhinelander Stewart. He raised the funds to erect the monument celebrating George Washington’s inauguration. The temporary arch was so popular with the public that a permanent arch was started in 1892. The two statues of Washington were added in 1918.
