Five Inset Maps/Charts along the bottom. 1 – South Pole 2 – Color Code of the Main States (Countries) and/or States with Colonies 3 – Legend: Population/Capitals/Administrative Centers/Naval Bases/Northern Relations 4 – States (Countries), their Land Area and Population. 5 – North Pole The blue and yellow striping in north east China represents Manchuria (given here with the less-common name Manzhou). Starting in 1931, Chiang Kai-shek fought a long and bloody war against the Japanese occupation of Manchuria. This escalated into full-scale conflict in July 1937. The conquest of Manchuria, a land rich in natural resources, was widely seen as an economic "lifeline" to save Japan from the effects of the Great Depression. The inset map of the North Pole has interesting details. 1937 was a big year in Soviet polar exploration. The red line in this map refers to "North Pole - 1", the Soviet's first manned drifting ice station in the Arctic Ocean. The black line chart the U.S.S.R.'s historic first flight over the North Pole, beginning in Moscow and ending in Vancouver, Washington. Print run - GavLit (General Directorate for the Protection of State Secrets in the Press). Submitted for Production 1. January 1937.
