  • DESCRIPTION: A very rare, privately published map of Shelter Island.<br><br> A key identifies all the buildings, open roads, old cart paths & private roads and wind mills. The map shows the island at a very tranquil time, easily less than 200 homes are noted. All the owners names are given, Conklin, Cartwright, Case Clark, Horsford, Sterns, Osborne, Tuthill, Nicholl etc. Rams Head is completely baron of homes and is owned in its entirely by the Tuthill family. West Neck has five homes. Both the summer resorts of the Prospect and Manhanset Houses are shown. Also noted is a slave burial ground.<br><br> Soundings are noted surrounding the island. A small portion of Greenport is shown as well as the locations for Long Beach "Bug" lighthouse and Cedar Island Lighthouse.
