DESCRIPTION: Signed and titled in pencil.<BR><BR> Jefferson Market was originally known as the Jefferson Market Courthouse. Designed by Frederick Clarke Withers and built between 1874 and 1877, its original purpose was as the Third Judicial District Courthouse. The building was scheduled for demolition in 1958, but public outcry from the surrounding neighborhoods halted the demolition, and it became part of the New York Public Library, which is still in use today. The building is located on Sixth Avenue on a triangular lot formed by 10th Street and Greenwich Avenue.
