Artistically inclined at a young age, he would go on to pursue his dreams. He studied at the University of California in Los Angeles and at the Yale School of Fine Arts, where he met famed painter, printmaker, and muralist Jean Charlot, who convinced Schoppe to study at the Art Students League in New York City.

While at the Art Students League, he studied under Thomas Hart Benton, who inspired him to travel to the Southern United States. Following Benton’s figurative style, Schoppe produced lithographs and watercolors of blacks working the fields, general life activities, and jazz musicians. Returning to Southern California in 1934 by way of New Orleans and South Carolina, Schoppe converted his sketches and memories of his visit to the south as a series of ten lithographs, which he published as Carolina Low Country portfolio at the studio of master lithographer Lynton Kistler. Many images show long, lanky figures, similar to those found in Benton’s work, while others reflect the influence of traditional African art. He respected the Gullah culture and superstitions he encountered when he visited Wadmalaw Island. “everyone was desperately poor…found black and white people to be hospitable…no feeling of being an outsider/foreign/being white.” .Palmer Schorppe.
