DESCRIPTION: A highly decorative view of the fortified port of Gallipolis in Italy. Gallipoli is a town on an island off the coast in Apulia, southern Italy. This view appeared in Braun & Hogenburg's grand publication "Civitates Orbis Terrarum." This series contained over 500 city views/maps and was published in six parts between 1572 and 1617. This plan of Gallipolos first appeared in 1580. The view is beautifully adorned with a coat of arms, compass rose, galleons under sail and Galiot’s, aka half galley’s, under oar and sail power.
