  • DESCRIPTION: Signed lower right "Jos Stella." <BR><BR> Joseph Stella produced a remarkable body of collages, most are signed, few are dated. None were exhibited during his lifetime, two were reproduced in "The Little Review" autumn, 1922. All the collages are very different than his drawings and paintings. His drawings are hard-edged images of the modern world, his collages are messy, scraps of dirty paper, organic elements, (leaves, old newspapers, pages from books, advertisements, theater tickets, and cigarette wrappers.) and splashes of paint are all utilized. <BR><BR> About the collages "Most of them are signed, and their sheer number suggests that they meant more to him than just a passing fancy or casual experiment. . .
