  • DESCRIPTION: This map shows Minnesota in its second year of statehood and Dakota in its first year as a territory. The proposed route for "Gov. Steven's Northern Pacific Railroad" is shown. Isaac I. Stevens was the first Governor of Washington Territory. He envisioned a railroad from Minnesota to Puget Sound, carrying settlers to build up his territory. Unfortunately, this displaced many of the native tribes of the northern plains. A few of them, such as the Mandans and the Crees, are indicated on this map as still inhabiting much of the Dakota territory.
