  • DESCRIPTION: This finely engraved map from Colton's General Atlas depicts the United States during a period of rapid territorial expansion, with early and exaggerated configurations of the western states and territories. Nebraska spans a vast area encompassing present-day Montana, the Dakotas, and Wyoming, while Oregon and Washington stretch eastward to include modern-day Idaho. "Kanzas" and Utah appear significantly oversized, highlighting the unsettled nature of western borders at the time. The map also marks two proposed transcontinental railway routes
