N.Y.

"Montrose is situated on the N. side of the Island about 4 miles above Glen Cove dock, on the E. side of the harbour; & is from 8 to 10 miles to Sands Light-house Oyster Bay, Jerico, Hempstead (S) Flushing & Jamaica. 18 Miles from Williamsburg by the new turnpike thro Newton, Flushing & N. Hempstead, 25 by the L.I. rail-road of Jerico & Jamaica turnpike, & 27 by Steam-boat thro the Sound & East River, to New York. There are numerous water powers, Mills & Factories in & near the place, Post Office & Stores; fine air & pure spring water, & unrivalled scenery."

Large view in upper right: "A View of Hempstead Harbour (from Montrose) L.I. Sound. Taken from Moulton Avenue & Coles St."

A very rare (two other known examples located at the Brooklyn Historical Society) and early real estate promotional map. It seems that the promotion failed as tightly laid out community was never built. Homes that were already built including Pearsall's Mansion, Bogetts Mill and a hotel are shown in outline. The current day location is Roslyn.
