  • DESCRIPTION: A beautiful map of Russia which was based on the travels of Anthony Jenkinson, an agent for the Moscovy Company in Russia and one of the first western Europeans to travel widely throughout Russia. The map is filled with vignette illustrations and descriptive texts including scenes of Steppe horsemen, camels and of local inhabitants. The Grand Duke of Muscovy is enthroned before his tent in the upper left corner.<br><br> Ortelius is the best known for producing the atlas from which this map comes from, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or “Atlas of the Whole World". The atlas was immensely popular and was produced for over forty years. On the back of the map is a description of the region.
