The efforts of workers to strengthen the unions that could bargain for minimum wages and better working conditions for them were redoubled during the difficult years of the Depression. Strikes, demonstrations, and confrontations between employees and police or security guards increased dramatically between 1932 and 1938. For the first time, unions actively sought to establish local organizations for black workers and offered equal membership in a number of fields.
