  • DESCRIPTION: A beautiful panoramic view of the walled cities of Buda and Pest. executed during the Turkish occupation. The view depicts two separate towns across each other on a Danube River, connected by a pontoon bridge.<br><br> Buda was the seat of the local Ottoman pasha. During that period many of the churches were converted to mosques, shown here with their characteristic domes. The illustration in the foreground shows the pasha with his delije (body guard) who wears feathers pierced through the skin of his scalp. This view appeared in Braun & Hogenburg's grand publication "Civitates Orbis Terrarum." This series contained over 500 city views/maps and was published in six parts between 1572 and 1617.
