  • DESCRIPTION: A small soldiers or sailor’s manuscript plan depicting the siege of Port Hudson on the Mississippi River. The city is shown with its defending redoubts with some identification of the gun sizes. The city is surrounded by Union forces under command of various commanders including Weizel, Grover, Emery, Dwight, Dudley and Auger. In the river USN vessels are identified. The USS Hartford is shown above the city with the USS Monongahela, Richmond, Genesee and a group of mortar schooners just below. The USS Kineo and troop transport vessels are shown below Port Hudson at are location identified as Springfield Landing. Various plantations are names along the western shoreline.<br><br> The battle or Siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, (May 22 – July 9, 1863) was the final engagement in the Union campaign to recapture the Mississippi River during the Civil War.<br><br> No author or artist name is noted. There are several folds lines in the paper suggesting it was likely included in a letter.
