  • DESCRIPTION: "Surveyed July 1864. By N. Wescoatt, C.E. Located Sept. & Oct. 1859. Made to accompany Report of Dr. J. A. Veatch." The Comstock Lode, discovered in 1859 in western Nevada, was a gold and silver lode. It yielded half the silver output of the United States until the mid 1880's. As a result, the town of Virginia City grew at the site. It is now a ghost town.
