DESCRIPTION: Signed and titled in pencil.

Madison Square Park is 6.2 acres in the Flatiron District, bounded by Fifth Avenue/Broadway, Madison Avenue, 23rd Street, and 26th Street. It is known worldwide for naming the sports arena Madison Square Garden, whose original location was Northeast of the park. The park was named after President James Madison. The area originally was a swamp with a creek. In 1686, it became a public space, and by 1700, it was used as a potters’ field. Between 1811 and 1825, an area between 23rd and 34th Streets was designated for military drilling. In 1825 in became the New York House of Refuge for the protection of Juvenile Delinquents until 1839, when the building was destroyed by fire. On May 10, 1847, the current configuration of Madison Square Park opened to the public.

Another famous feature of Madison Square Park is that it housed the Arm and Torch of the Statue of Liberty between 1876 and 1882, while they were raising money to build the pedestal on what is today called Liberty Island.

In the background of this print, you can see the Empire State Building, which was built between 1930 and 1931 and was the tallest building until the original World Trade Centers were built in 1970.
