• DESCRIPTION: Title continues with: compiled from the Coast Survey chart and other reliable sources, by Wm. Dame. American Photo-Lithographic Co.

Outstanding map of Conanicut Island detailing the municipal arrangement of Jamestown and its surrounding farmlands and estates. Many property owners identified by name.

Two layouts appear for proposed development which never materialized: Ocean Highlands, a scant platted grid at the bottom of the island and Conanicut Park, a planned Methodist community at its northern tip. Conanicut Park was to comprise of small irregular lots averaging about 50 by 100 feet and priced at $150 each. The homes were to be small ornamental cottages. A number of these small homes were built and still survive to this day. Overall, the planned community was a financial bust.

Several small vignette illustrations surround the map, some of these are views of: Fort Dumpling, Benton’s Reef lightship, Fort Adams, Lime Rocks the New and Old Ferry docks in Jamestown.

The map is quite scarce with under five examples known. A comparison to the example at the New York Public Library shows several variations which seem to indicate ours would be a second state: a changed Newport address for real estate agent and publisher Daniel Watson; the pictorial vignettes seen here are absent; and a good number of property owner's names not seen there are presently added or updated.
