• DESCRIPTION: In December 1765 Lieutenant John Montresor, an engineer in his Majesty's forces, was commissioned by General Gage to produce a map of the city which at the time was seething with anger towards the crown due to the newly applied Stamp Act tax. For his safety, Montesor had to conduct his surveys in secret, which is the reason for the maps notable omissions and inaccuracies. At the time of this maps drafting, most of the area above current day City Hall was farm lands. The inset map in the upper left is a chart of the entrance of New York harbor. Second of two issues.
