DESCRIPTION: An unusual full color example of De L'isle's double hemisphere map of the world.<br><br> The ribbon title cartouche is centered on the French royal coat of arms, itself surrounded by allegorical female representations of the four continents. In the lower cusp is a cartouche containing Delisle's imprint with his address at Quay de l'Horloge. The map is up-to-date with the most recent exploration routes noted. The Pacific Northwest coast of North America is left blank above Cap Blanc. Australia and New Zealand are only partially mapped. Australia is connected to New Guinea. The routes of a number of great explorers are indicated by dotted lines: Magellan in 1520, Le Maire and Schouten in 1616, Mendana and Gallego in 1658 and Tasman in 1642.<br><br>
