DESCRIPTION: Mixed-media engraving by Franz Hanfstaegl after Christian Ruben. c. 1850. With additional title in German. Ruben’s painting also appeared as a Herline & Hensel lithograph titled “Christopher Columbus, at the Moment of the Discovery of Land.” In the scene Columbus stands calmly on deck, chart in hand, while his crewmen exhibit various expressions of joy and deliverance.
