  • DESCRIPTION: This map appeared in Jedidiah Morse's "The American Universal Geography." Phillips notes in "A List of Geographical Atlases in the Library of Congress", "While this work can not be regarded as an atlas, it contains a collection of the earliest maps of the states in the union." This map shows Pennsylvania, all of New Jersey, most of Maryland, and New York State. The Erie Triangle in northwestern PA appears as a part of New York State.<br><br> Osgood Carleton was one of the leading colonial-era American cartographers working in Boston.
