Created during the golden age of celestial cartography, it reflects the work of Johann Elert Bode, a prominent 18th- and 19th-century astronomer.

Born in Hamburg in 1747, Bode gained early recognition for his publications on astronomy, including Anleitung zur Kenntniss des gestirnten Himmels. He became Director of the Berlin Observatory in 1786 and is best known for his Uranographia (1801), a celestial atlas combining precise star mapping with imaginative constellation illustrations. Bode also contributed to astronomy with a smaller star atlas for amateurs, Vorstellung der Gestirne, the discovery of Bode's Galaxy (M81), and the naming of "Comet Bode" (C/1779 A1).
