Mitchell is one of the first truly successful commercial cartographers in the U.S.<br><br> In the lower left corner is an inset map of the Republic of Liberia, from Gurley's Report. Made to the Senate of the United States in 1850.<br><br> Rev. Ralph Randolph Gurley (1797-1872), a member of the American Colonization Society and a vigorous proponent of the resettlement of African Americans in a colony in Liberia.
