DESCRIPTION: A fine map from the Cowperthwait edition of Mitchell's "A New Universal Atlas containing maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World." Mitchell is one of the first truly successful commercial cartographers in the U.S.<br><br> In the lower left corner is an inset map of the Republic of Liberia, from Gurley's Report. Made to the Senate of the United States in 1850.<br><br> Rev. Ralph Randolph Gurley (1797-1872), a member of the American Colonization Society and a vigorous proponent of the resettlement of African Americans in a colony in Liberia.
