  • DESCRIPTION: Civil War-era political conflicts intensified in the North as the presidential election of 1864 approached. The Democrats nominated Lincoln’s former general, George McClellan, for president, while some Radical Republicans created a new political party named the Radical Democracy. They nominated General John Fremont for president and General John Cochrane as Vice President. The Radical Democracy party demanded a constitutional amendment ending slavery, protection of constitutional rights, and an aggressive continuation of the war. Abraham Lincoln won the Republican platform and was re-elected for a second term.
