  • DESCRIPTION: The port of Nangasaki, Japan. The map locates the principal points of interest and major buildings. The Desima is central to the map. This artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki was where the VOC (Dutch East India Company) were allowed to trade with the representatives of the Shogun in Edo.<br><br> This map appeared in Prevost's "Histoire des Voyages", 1738-75.<br><br> Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was one of the most important and proficient French cartographers of the eighteenth century. He was appointed the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King.
