In this whimsical lithograph, Mace is shown with a toy horse representing the celebrated trotter Judge Fullerton, capturing the humor and charm of 19th-century sporting prints. Beneath the image appear four lines of verse, offering a tribute to Mace’s skill and sportsmanship:

As good a driver as e'er pulled a rein, Or strove the prize of victory to obtain. Whether he win or lose, a man so true, In the front rank will always bear the blue.

The print is a fine example of how Currier & Ives blended caricature with genuine admiration for figures of the turf, portraying the color and competition of trotting culture in post-Civil War America.
