  • DESCRIPTION: Conningham lists the date as 1870, this impression has no date.<BR> The image shows Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner at the table with the Devil on his right.<BR><BR> Above Sumner's head "The Country may go to you. . . what I want is revenge!"<BR> Above the Devil's head "All right Senator, I'll take charge of your case."<BR><BR> Two signs on table "Letter to Colored Citizens" and "Sumner's Speech Against Grant." <BR><BR> The date of the print is more likely 1871 when he got into a dispute with President Grant over the attempted annexation of Santo Domingo. Grant had him removed from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee which he chaired 1861-1871.
