  • DESCRIPTION: The USS Jeannette was a naval exploration ship that took part in the Jeannette expedition to the Arctic from 1879–1881. The voyage was bankrolled by James Gordon Bennett and set sail from San Francisco on July 8, 1879. George Washington De Long, a U.S. naval officer, led the expedition. <BR><BR> The ship became trapped in the ice near Wrangel Island, about 350 miles from the Siberian coast. The entire crew survived the sinking however 21 died including De Long on the small cutter or on the Lena Delta where they landed. The exhibition did contribute to science by collecting valuable meteorological and oceanographic data.<<BR>
