  • DESCRIPTION: Length 695 ft. (over 1/8 of a mile) Breadth 83 ft Four Decks, 18,915 tons register, 5,00 tons larger than Noah's Ark. Draught of Water 20 ft and when laden 30 ft. Diameter of side wheels 60ft. Designed by J.K. Brunel Esq Built by Mess Scott & Russel London. Weigth of Iron used in the construction 10,000 Tons. Combined steam power, 3000 horses, and spreads 6,500 square yards of canvas. To walk around the Deck exceeds 1/4 of a mile. Diameter of Screw Propellor 24 ft. Depth from Deck to Hold 60ft. Will carry 10,000 troops or 800 first class 200 second class 1200 third class. Total 4000. 22,500 tons. 3000 horse power.<BR><BR> Launched in 1858 she was the largest ship afloat. Originally with five smoke stacks, later reduced to four. The ship had sail, paddle and screw propulsion. The order demanded that the ship be able to dock in the shallow Hooghly River (in India). The screw provided most of the propulsion, the paddles when the water was too shallow. Sails if the steam power failed. She never carried passengers to India, only across the Atlantic to the US and Canada. She is most famous for laying the transatlantic cable in 1866. She was broken up for salvage in 1889.
