DESCRIPTION: This is one of the most important early maps of Southeast Asia, stretching from the Indian subcontinent to New Guinea. Japan appears and, to the far right, is the northwest coast of North America. The map is embellished with a strapwork cartouche, plus mermaids and whales cavorting in the Pacific Ocean.<br><br> Ortelius is the best known for producing the atlas from which this map comes from, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, or “Atlas of the Whole World". The atlas was immensely popular and was produced for over forty years. On the back of the map is a description of the region.
