DESCRIPTION: A fine map of the walled Polish port city of Gdansk, here noted her under its German name Dantzig. The city has a complex history, having had periods of Polish, German and self rule.<br><br> Below the map is a view of the city as it looked at the early 18th century. A lettered key identifies twelve important buildings and locations.<br><br> George Mattaus Seutter the elder (1678-1757) was an apprentice to Johann B. Homann, (another great German cartographer who's style was a big influence), in the late 17th century. He left Homann and settled in Augsburg where he set up his own shop. Later joined by his son, Albrecht, who continued the firm in partnership with Tobias C. Lotter upon his father's death.
