DESCRIPTION: The Battle of Milazzo was fought on 15 October 1718. This scarce battle plan map depicts the fortifications and strategic elements surrounding the town of Melazzo in the Kingdom of Sicily, during the War of the Quadruple Alliance. Below the map is a perspective view of the fortress.

Following the re-capture of Sardinia and virtually all of Sicily by King Philip V of Spain, the war saw the formation of an alliance between Great Britain, France, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Dutch Republic against Spain, which sought to regain Spanish territories lost in previous conflicts.

George Mattaus Seutter the elder (1678-1757) was an apprentice to Johann B. Homann, (another great German cartographer who's style was a big influence), in the late 17th century. He left Homann and settled in Augsburg where he set up his own shop. Later joined by his son, Albrecht, who continued the firm in partnership with Tobias C. Lotter upon his father's death.
