DESCRIPTION: A rare English text version.

This map, in the Jodocus Hondius version, (1618) was the first derivative of the highly important John Smith Map of Virginia of 1612 which was first to depict the bay and its tributaries with any accuracy. Jodocus Hondius first issued the map in 1618 but only small handful was printed. In 1629 Jodocus died and his widow, unbeknownst to his brother Henricus, sold the copper plate to firm of Willem Blaeu. Henricus had to re-engrave an entirely new plate which was issued in 1630. In the upper left corner is an image the great Indian chief Powhatan surrounded by his subjects. In the upper right is the British Royal Arms, below that is an image of an Indian warrior armed with a bow and war club.

ADDITIONAL INFO: English editions of this map appeared in only three years, 1636, 1638 and 1641. The text begins with: "Virginia, as some write, tooke this name from a petty King of theirs called Viguinus... . The people of this Countrie are of a middel stature, they use to paint their bodies with the pictures of serpents, & other ugly beast, and goe clothed in a loose mantle made of Deeres skinne, and weare an apron of the same before their nakedness...".
CONDITION: Very good condition save for faint damp stain in lower corners. Uncolored. A fine impression on this map.
