• DESCRIPTION: Richard Blome's scarce map of North America, the second earliest map of the continent published in England after Briggs landmark map of 1625..

Cartographically, this map is based on Nicolas Sanson's important map of 1650, of which Blome gives credit in the subtitle. It is the first English map to show five Great Lakes, although two, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, are open-ended to the west. Newfoundland is enhanced by the depiction of the Avalon Peninsula. Curiously, Florida shows a series of hills (perhaps sand dunes?)
